Striped Infant Set

Materials:

Three 1-ounce balls of blue baby yarn and 1 bail of white. You will need one pair each of size 1 and size 3 standard knitting needles, a size 1 steel crochet hook and 6 small pearl buttons. The directions are for a six month size.

Gauge: 7 sts equal 1 inch; 8.

Abbreviations: k (knit) ch (chain) p (purl) tog (together) st (stitch) 0 (yarn over) sl (slip) sc (single crochet)

Stripe Pattern St: Use a bail of yarn for each color. Always change color on wrong side and carry new strand to be used in back of strand just dropped.

Row 1: * With blue, k 2, with white, k 2, repeat from * across

Row 2: * With blue, p 2, with white, k 2, repeat from * across.

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

Pattern:

Back of jacket: With blue yarn and size 3 needles, cast on 76 sts. Work even in stockinette st for 8 rows, ending with a p row. P the next 2 rows to form hemline and continue in stockinette st until piece measures 6 1/2inches above hemline.

Shape armholes: At the beginning of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3 sts. K 2 tog at beginning and end of next row.

Work even on 68 sts until armholes measure 3 1/2 inches.

Shape shoulders: At the beginning of each of the next 2 rows bind off 20 sts. Bind off remaining 28 sts.

Pocket lining: With blue yarn and size 3 needles, cast on 22 sts. Work even in stockinette st for 2 1/2 inches, ending with a k row. Sl these sts on a holder.

Left Front: With blue yarn and size 3 needles, cast on 36 sts. Work in stockinette st for 8 rows, ending with a p row. P the next row. At the beginning of next row, cast on 12 sts (front border), p to end of row. Then work as follows:

Row 1: K to last 12 sts, p 1, k 5, sl 1, k 5.

Row 2: P 11, k 1, p to end of row.

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 2½ inches above hemline, ending with row 2.

Now k 6, work stripe pattern st across next 22 sts (for pocket trim), work plain in blue to end of row. Continue working pocket sts in stripe pattern st, for 3 rows more.

Pocket Opening

Row 1: K 6, bind off 22 sts, k each st to end of row.

Row 2: P 11, k 1, p to bound off sts. P sts from st holder, p to end of row. Keeping border as before, work even in stockinette st until piece measures 6½ inches above hemline.

Shape Armhole: At armhole edge bind off 3 sts, work across row. K 2 tog at armhole edge every other row 2 times. Work even until armhole measures 2½ inches, ending at front edge.

Shape Neck: Bind off 20 sts. Continue to work k 2 tog at same edge every other row 3 times. Work even on 20 sts until armhole measures same as back. Bind off.

Right Front: Work to correspond with left front, omit pocket and be sure to reverse border and all shaping must be on opposite side. Form first double buttonhole when piece measures ½ inch above hemline.

Double buttonhole: At front edge, k 2, 0, k 2 tog, k 1, sl 1, k 1, k 2 tog, 0, k 2, p 1, k to end of row. Work 4 more buttonholes, evenly spaced (about 1¾ inches apart) the last one to be made about 1 inch before neck shaping.

Sleeves: Sew shoulder seams. Then with right side facing use blue yarn and size 3 needles, pick up 53 sts around armhole edge. Work in stockinette st for 3 inches, k 2 tog at beginning and end of needle on last row. P next 2 rows to form hemline. Work in stockinette st for 6 rows. Bind off.

Collar: With size 3 needles and blue yarn, cast on 90 sts. Work in stripe pattern st for 1 1/4 inches. Bind off.

Finishing: Sew sleeve and underarm seams. Hem all edges. Weave sts of neck border together. Finish double buttonholes.

Sew pocket lining in place. Sew collar to neck to within 1 inch of each neck edge (border sts). Work 1 row of sc in blue around collar edge and top of pocket. Sew on buttons. Embroider emblem as illustrated if desired.

Pants: With blue yarn and size 1 needles cast on 82 sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1/2 inch.

Beading: * K 2, 0, p 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Continue in ribbing until piece measures 1½ inches. Change to size 3 needles and work in stripe pattern st until piece measures 7 inches.

Next Row: Work 26 sts, place sts on holder, work across 30 sts, place remaining 26 sts on holder. Change to size 1 needles, with blue, work center 30 sts in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2½ inches. Change to size 3 needles, cast on 26 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. With right side facing, work stripe pattern st until piece measures same as back of pants, ending with p row.

Change to size 1 needles, with blue, work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ½ inch. Form beading as on back piece. Continue in ribbing until same size as back of pants. Bind off sts loosely.

Leg band: With right side facing, use blue yarn and size 1 needles, pick up 26 sts on the holder, pick up 22 sts across ribbing for crotch, pick up 26 sts along other side. Work 9 rows of k 2, p 2 ribbing on these sts. Bind off loosely in ribbing. Repeat for other leg band.

Cord: Make a ch about 28 inches long. Work 1 sc in each ch. Fasten off.

Tassel: Wind yarn desired number of times over a 2-inch cardboard. Cut yarn at one end, then tie in center. Fold yarn and tie about 1/2 inch from folded edge. Trim cut edge. Fasten at end of cord.

Finishing: Sew side seams. Block to size. Draw cord through beading and tie in bow.
